She had done this.

She allowed herself the briefest of moments to be shocked, to be overwhelmed.

You did this, a voice told her. This is your power.

She thought someone in the alley had said it to her, and it startled her. But there was no one else there. No one but the unconscious men scattered all about her.

Then she ran.

Rieve ran straight to the shipyards and was only one minute late. Her contact—a female Pantoran with bright blue skin who wanted Rieve to stay for a chat—muttered thanks as Rieve immediately made for home.

What have I done? she wondered.

But that thought was soon replaced with another:

How?

She knew it was risky to head to the orphanage because she might wake the Togruta sisters, but there was no way she was leaving Coronet City without what she’d hidden there.

At the orphanage, she slipped in through the back as quietly as she could. She snuck to the restrooms in the rear of the building, past shut doors and sleeping children, and she pressed her body against the cool floor once inside. There was a tile behind one of the sinks that could be pried off, and there she’d hidden all the credits she’d earned from Feyr and the audiochips she’d collected over the years. She stuffed them into a satchel, replaced the tile, and then promptly struck her head when she stood up.

The loud thunk echoed through the room, and moments later, Sister Xyla swung the door open. Rieve’s face immediately sunk.

“Rieve, really?” she said. She was wearing a plain white robe tucked under her head tails that contrasted with the bright red skin of her face. “It’s the middle of the night. Can’t you just be a normal child?”

Rieve clutched her head. “I’m sorry,” she said, and she was, because as she stood there, her life savings in a lone satchel, she knew she’d never see Sister Xyla again.

“You’re always sorry, Rieve,” said the Togruta, her voice low in disappointment. “I want you to be better.”

Rieve was not a sentimental person, but she rushed forward and put her arms around Sister Xyla. It was a quick thing, and she pushed her way around the Togruta. “I promise I won’t bother you again!” she called out as she ran for the front entrance.

She slipped out as quietly as she could but immediately froze. Someone was coming toward the orphanage. Rieve ducked back inside, hidden behind the heavy fabric hangings that covered the entrance.

It wasn’t someone. Rieve held her breath as an entire squadron of Imperial stormtroopers marched forward. Their boots echoed in unison.

What are they doing? she wondered, her heart thumping so loud she was sure they’d hear it.

The stormtroopers froze just two doors down from the orphanage.

“Which one, sir?”

He appeared from behind them. He wore a dark blue cloak that swept the ground as he walked, and his hood was so deep that she could not see inside it. She only heard his voice:

“Feyr said she was in the orphanage.”

The voice was dark. Masculine.
